More Health & Beauty Ads On TV Than Ever?

Posted by: Chris   Published in: All Posts, Random Thoughts

TV remoteWatching television last night I noticed how many ads there were for health and beauty related products. To me it seems like there are more ads like this than even before. I decided to do a little test just to see how many ads were on during just one ad break. I wrote down each product the ad was promoting.

Program: Friends
Channel: Channel 4
Time: started at 9am

  • Polaris World - buy property abroad
  • Closer Magazine - gossip mag
  • Leatherheads - a new movie
  • Olay Regenerist - anti-ageing moisturiser
  • Persil - washing up liquid
  • Ministry Of Sound CD - music album
  • Actimel Probiotic - helps support body’s defences
  • Garnier Nutrisse - hair cream
  • Kellogg’s Optivia - cereal which helps lower cholesterol
  • Channel 4 Ad for Desperate Housewives sponsored by Herbal Essences

Out of the main 9 adverts (excluding the promotion of Desperate Housewives) 4 of them were health and beauty related; Olay Regenerist, Actimel, Garnier Nutrisse and Kellogg’s Optivia. If you include the Herbal Essences sponsorship on Channel 4 then it comes to 5 out of 10 adverts were health and beauty related.

In the past I don’t remember there being so many adverts related to health and beauty, I know it’s a growing industry but think if the amount of categories products fall into. There wasn’t a single car ad, supermarket ad or clothes ad.

This was only a small test, and only using one ad break isn’t enough when you consider there are thousands of different ads running every day. I like doing tests and basic research so I feel a more comprehensive ad watching session coming up. I’ll post in the future on my findings.
