Normally tomatos are red (like the one in the pretty picture on the left) but now Scientists have developed a genetically engineered tomato which contains nutrients which help prevent cancer. The nutrients are normally found in dark berries - hence the special Purple Tomato!
The finding has been published in the Nature Biotechnology journal and provides more force for those who say that plants can be genetically modified to make people healthier.
So far the scientists have developed the purple tomatoes and tested them on cancer-prone mice. In the test the mice fed purple tomatoes lived significantly longer than those fed a standard diet with and without regular tomatoes. The difference was a life of 142 days for mice on normal tomatoes and 182 days for those eating purple tomatoes!
So if you soon see some purple tomatoes in your salad at your favourite restaurant, don’t freak out because they could actually help you to avoid getting cancer.
